Ukendt/Igloo

  • 1619 Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, CA, 90026 United States (map)

A dome-shaped, outdoor installation by Danish artist Anja Franke, architect John Southern, and the newest addition to the M_A team, lead fabricator Nick Blake, is an construction of bamboo and industrial felt. Now bulging from the M_A Courtyard, the piece is a mix of Northern and Southern clime influences. The piece, entitled, Igloo / Ukendt, is an insertion of the idea of a cold climate icon rendered using warm climate materials and techniques appropriate to Southern California.

Anja Franke contacted M_A while she was hosting architectural installations in her own backyard in a suburb of Copenhagen during the summer of 2004. A visitor had told her about the similarities between her project, entitled, “instantHERLEV” and the ongoing installations at M_A. Igloo / Ukendt is the result of three years of gradual development and an intensive collaboration between the lead team-members and M_A.
